@Wildwing wrote:Abanak turned his head from the dragon to look back at Zarrock, raising an eyebrow at the hawk at his late appearance. His beak remained closed, even as his superior spoke. Foolish words, he thought.
He gracefully ducked in time for Agathar's head to swing past. Letting out a soft sigh, he stepped to the side and straightened up.
"What became of the soldiers that had accompanied you, your majesty?" the eagle inquired, the question a matter of business.
Agathar continued looking at Zarrock for a moment even as Abanak spoke. When his glaring was done he snorted and turned to the other Shade. "The survivors of the blast were sent after the falcon, but I doubt their ability to catch him. We'll need to come up with another way to get what we need."

Zarrock spoke again, this time more calmly, "I could send more after him, or I could go myself, but... I still don't see why we're after this tracking disk. No matter what comes out of those Rifts, it won't be a problem."

"I doubt that is entirely true," Abanak grimaced, "I suspect anything that would appear out of those Rifts could either grant us a great advantage, or become a serious threat to his majesty's regime. Otherwise, why would our king leave to retrieve it himself?"

"Correct." Agathar grunted, his tail sliding across the obsidian floor. "It's not the Rifts that I want, exactly. We're not even sure anything will appear, but we know Rinka is interested... and whatever Rinka is interested in, I am intrigued by. Clearly she thinks these Rifts are important. Vylk entered the room on four legs, his large white body not different from any other polar bear except for the dark grey markings around his violet eyes, and his slightly larger than normal hind paws. He bowed to Agathar upon entering, and remained stooped, waiting to be acknowledged.

"Ah, more late arrivals. Good." Agathar nodded to the bear as he entered. "We were just discussing the matter of these Rifts opening up again. I don't think you were present for the last meeting. Zarrock, explain."

Zarrock hesitated for a moment but eventually sighed and turned to Vylk. "We have a... complication. We need to track the Rift locations to set a trap for the Last Phoenix, but we lost our opportunity to get the tracking disk... I'm wondering if we shouldn't come up with a different plan?"

Vylk rose and pondered a moment while Zarrock explained. "If the tracking disk is lost, then we will most certainly need another way to know where the Rifts will be. I would suggest finding, and capturing, any individuals who might have such knowledge, or ways of gaining it," he glanced around at the others as he spoke, but kept his eyes from looking directly at Agathar's face.

A blood-curdling scream filed the air as a bearded vulture landed on the ground in front of the other commanders. He's called Mav'ryn, but others have grown to calling him Bones due to his... interesting diet. "My King," he addressed Agathar, every syllable dripping with venom. "Many apologies for the interruption, I have grave news to report."

"Syrune has failed to report to her detachment in the south east as of this morning... and might I add, a pair of the new recruits have vanished as well." His manner of speaking was slow and every syllable had a bite to it, he folded his wings close to his chest as his beady red eyes stared at the dragon awaiting a response.

Agathar pondered as the bear spoke, nodding slowly. "I'm not sure that would be best. You can't set up a trap if they know you're looking for one. We'll need to-"

Zarrock sighed as the dragon spoke, rolling his eyes. "I still don't understand why we don't just fly over to her pile of rubble with every Shade we can muster and burn it down! We could kill them all in one go!"

Agathar snarled dismissively at Zarrock's interruption, "Idiot! you cannot stomp out a rebellion with violence! If we attack her directly, even if we kill her, we'll just make her a martyr for other leaders. Even if we killed every single disloyal creature on this world, someone would rise against us! I don't want this world dead, I want it obedient! We have to break her into submission while she's still seen as a Queen, get her to convince her people that there is no victory for them. That's the only way to end this sufficiently."

Vylk was silent during the exchange, but looked over when Mav'ryn landed, mentally cringing at the sight of the vulture. Sure, Vylk had some horrible and dark things about him, but something about that bird unsettled him.

Agathar paused at the interruption, his spines along his back beginning to prickle with frustration until he listened to the unwelcome messenger. At the mention of Syrune, Agathar glared towards Zarrock, knowing all too well what this would mean for him.

Zarrock was stunned, a low hiss emitting from his beak as he listened to the vulture.
"WHAT?" he hissed, flickering his gaze back up to meet Agathar's for a moment. Both of them knew already exactly which two recruits were missing.

"She was loyal!" Zarrock started to defend himself as Agathar took a step towards him, the dragon seething with rage.

"I told you this would happen, you worthless HATCHLING!" Agathar dug his claws into the black stone so hard that it began to crack underneath him, and he swung his tail around to crash into the wall beside him. "BRING ME THE KAHIIR!! And bring me a talonful of Syrune's nest. I will not have another Phoenix in rebellion. Commanders, gather teams and search everything from here to the coast! We will discuss the matter of these Rifts, and the Elder Dragon after I have dealt with this."

Mav'ryn flinched slightly at Agathar's booming voice and took a step backwards, wings still to his chest. The carrion bird seemed unphased at the dragon's outburst compared to some of the other Shade Commanders in the room. "So My King," the vulture hissed. "Shall I be the one to retrieve the talonful of nest for you?"

"No, my King," the vulture spoke, his eyes not breaking contact with Agathar's. "Not as whisper has 'scaped my breath. The only ones that know of this are in this room with us." Vylk nodded briskly, and was quickly on his way to collect the part from Syrune's nest. He growled orders to a bird who looked like he wasn't doing anything productive, "Muster my best wolves and bears and have them ready to leave on notice! I've things to do, and after that, I will need to lead a search!" He didn't stop to acknowledge the bird's hasty salute as it skittered off, squawking an awkward 'Yes, Sir!' as it flapped quickly away.

As the last word escaped the dragon's jaws, he whipped his pointed tail around from behind him like a snake and rammed it into the vulture's neck with a flash of silver. He pulled the bladed-tip out of the bird's throat and let the blood pour onto the black floor, cherishing the look of surprise in the bird's eyes while his own flickered with mischief. The dragon set his bloodied tail back on the ground and looked to the other Commanders. "Not a word of this leaves this room. Tell your teams only that they are chasing a trio of Hawks wanted for crimes.... and one of you clean this up."

Zarrock nodded to the dragon as he backed out of the room, not phased at the death at all. "I'll inform the bear as well. I will return with the Kahiir... my king."

The Harris Hawk dipped his head and fluttered out of the room via the landing platform, turning mid-air to head towards the base of the Spire.

...Geez, and here I was thinking Agathar wasn't such a brute! XD )

As more animals joined the meeting, Abanak fell silent. He listened rather than contribute to the outbursts. Surprise flashed through his eyes upon hearing about Syrune, honestly shocked with the news the ghastly vulture had brought. He shot a look towards Zarrock before listening carefully to his king's orders.

He shouldn't have been startled when Agathar's tail stabbed into the vulture's throat. He had seen it coming, yet it still got him. He grimaced and shifted his gaze to the exit, intent on being the one to gather a part of Syrune's nest. But Vylk had beat him to it.

Watching Zarrock leave after the bear, Abanak realized he was the only creature in the room. Which meant...

And one of you, clean this up.

The eagle bit back a sigh and turned back around. His gaze hardened upon meeting the pathetic corpse of that vulture, whose name he had already forgotten. But, per his king's order, he went to it and wrapped one of his large talons all the way around his skull. Then he bowed to the dragon.

"My king," he said in parting before flying out through the landing platform, dragging the corpse behind him.

We need the tracking **** to find them first and set a trap. I don't care what comes out of them, I care about getting her."

Abanak blinked, his expression blank.
"...Pardon me, you majesty, but the tracking what? I mean, I get you're frustrated and all, but no need to be so vulgar, my king."

Mav'ryn sat up from the dead, struggling to keep his head up from being, you know, stabbed. "Yes my King, we have innocent ears listening."

Abanak screamed and chucked Mav'ryn across the room. "WHAT THE?!?! Shocked "

In Zarrock's absence, Agathar watched as Abanak left through the landing platform, lashing his tail slowly behind him as the room emptied. The Dragon used his tail to clear the table, making a space for the Kahiir. It wasn't long in the silence that Agathar waited until the flutter of wingbeats woke him from thought.

"My King! It's heavier than expected!" Zarrock signaled his arrival with a complaint. Resting in the Harris Hawk's talons was a large, slime covered, green egg. He set the egg down on the empty stone table, near the center, and took his place beside the Dragon. For a while, nothing happened.

Agathar remained silent, observing he egg and lightly pressing his tail tip to it's edge. Zarrock had become impatient, sighing obnoxiously until Agathar snapped his head in the bird's direction. "I am making sure it's ready... where is Vlyk?"

Zarrock shrugged, "I instructed him not to speak of anything we discussed, and he should be up any moment with the piece of nest."

Agathar grumbled in acknowledgment, sliding his tail tip over the egg. "If I open it now, it will turn on us before it catches a scent. The Kahiir are devastatingly accurate hunters. They never lose a scent until they catch it's source, but they may search for other supplemental prey. We will loose it after the Phoenix at midnight, and he will bring us her head."

Zarrock churred in amusement, staring at the egg with a mixture of wonder and jealousy, when another thought occurred to him. "Speaking of hunting Phoenix.... I believe I have a solution to our other problem... "

Agathar fixed his gaze on the hawk, narrowing his eyes in a dare. "You're not going to suggest sending an army of Shades again, correct?"

Zarrock shook his head, the beginnings of a smile forming on his beak. "I don't need to send an army to unravel just Rinka and her loyal flock... I'll send just four, and she will give up."

Agathar stared at Zarrock seriously for a moment, pondering his request. "I see... your... projects, are they ready?"

A wicked grin broke out across Zarrock's beak, "Oh yes, my King... oh yes they are... "

(Too bad I gave the next bit away in the livestream... well... sort of Wink I can keep half of a secret, it seems~ )

Deep below the Spire, near the cell where Zarrock had just gotten the Kahiir egg, another set of doors remained locked. On the other side the darkness was broken up only by four violet lights. Shades, chained in the dark in separate corners of a the cave-like cell. In each corner lay a purple and blue-black burning bird, each muttering to themselves in the darkness.

Rokin, father to Rinka, Finnican, and Fayru, lay quietly burning in one corner. Mad and monstrous growls escaped his once kind beak, and his crazed eyes scanned the darkness, searching for his prey.

Falia, mother to the Peregrine Falcons as well lay in another corner, her head pressed against the wall. Every few moments she released a terrifying shriek at the top of her lungs, not that the other shades noticed.

In another corner rested a large Golden Eagle, Brutus. Once the personal Guard to Tyrin and dear friend of Rinka, he now scratched endlessly at the walls, his bloodied talons twitching with his head every time he stopped.

Another Peregrine Falcon sat in the final corner of the room, this one whispering to himself nonstop. Reeve, once the father to Kale, rambled on to himself as he repeated his incoherent sentences for the thousandth time.

Across the hall lay a second door, this one leading to a larger section of the cave. In this second dark cell rested a small group of muttering Shade Wolves, each searching the darkness for a way out. In the center of the group sat an old white wolf and his smaller grey and russet companion. The Alpha of the pack who resisted Zarrock, and the wolf he believed had killed him. K'Rule and Pike stared through the darkness, their violet, rage filled eyes scanned crazily through the shadows. Both Shades, and their pack, waited to serve their new master.

Later that night, both cell doors would swing open.

Several Hours Prior…

Rinka loved the feeling of the sun warming her back while the wind moved through her feathers. She let herself fall through the sky, her muscles completely relaxed as gravity took over. She watched the ground far below for a moment before closing her eyes. The Peregrine Falcon took in a deep breath through her nostrils before letting it all out in one long sigh. When she opened her eyes again, the stone and dirt ground was much closer.
Calmly, Rinka stretched out her wings, gust of wind catching in them and slowly her descent as she became parallel to the earth below. As she soared high above the heads of traveling land animals, the falcon glanced over her shoulder to the sky behind her. She spotted two small shapes in the distance coming her way, no doubt pumping their wings off trying to catch up to her. The queen had left her guards in the clouds again. Oops.

With a sheepish smile to herself, Rinka tilted her tail feathers and circled around. She considered flying back to her guards and even started to do so, but after thinking about it, she decided that having a few minutes by herself wouldn’t be so bad. And so, after gaining some altitude, the she-falcon began to make wide circles above the land as she waited for the two to catch up. It was during this time that she looked across her land.

Below her was barren land of broken up stone, covering the area with a radius of a kilometer. There were several areas like this across her land where no vegetation grew. The only green that could be seen in these areas of stone were the weeds that poked up through the less dense patches of rubble. Rinka wasn’t sure why these areas were placed where they were, or how they came to be. But she heard rumors involving the dwellings of ancient beings known as “humans”. To be specific, about how they were ruins, the remains of a species that became extinct overnight. Rinka honestly wasn’t sure what to make of these rumors, but she always kept an open mind whenever she heard someone talking about them.
These areas of stone were surrounded by a territory of grass and bush, home to prey animals such as mice and rabbits. But, because this specific territory was so vast, it was hard for the land animals to find them, which was why birds were usually sent out to hunt in this part of the land.

Rinka turned her gaze further west where, several kilometers in the distance, the land fell away to form a short cliff with a blanket of forest at its base. This cliff, known as The Western Ridge, which stretched in both direction for hours of travel, gradually decreasing in slope before finally becoming one with the flat earth, was the border of her land. There were certain places along the cliff edge where clumps of trees grew, especially towards the southwest where a thin forest lay. After certain incidents over the past few years, Rinka herself had knocked over several trees in the forest and lined them up along the edge of the cliff in order to warn the land animals of the danger and hopefully prevent them from running right off while chasing after prey.

“Your majesty!”

Rinka snapped her attention to the call. The guards had finally reached her.
The falcon straightened out her path as the two fell in on either side of her. Both, she noticed, were panting heavily.
“I’m sorry!” she apologized, now feeling bad for deciding not to go back to them, “I should have warned you.”

“No no! You’re fine!” the Sharp-Skinned Hawk to her left wheezed, “Her majesty can do whatever she desires! But it would be great if she would stay at her guards’ side.”

“Toro,” the Northern Harrier to Rinka’s right snapped with a glare to his partner.

“No, he’s right. I shouldn’t have left you behind and I apologize for that,” Rinka defended with a gracious smile. Though it felt nice having those moments to herself.
The Northern Harrier paused before nodding once.

“You are forgiven.”

The three fell silent as they soared through the air. The guards were at her sides, but Rinka was the lead. They would follow her wherever she wanted to go across the land. It was their duty to protect the queen and assist her in any way they could. Even when she wasn’t on a mission and just wanted to go out to stretch her wings, like she had been doing until then.
It had been a relaxing flight across the land, but it was time for Rinka to go back. And so, without a word, Rinka changed course and led her guards home to the East.

Somewhere along the way, the grassy plains below turned into silt, rock and random patches of vegetation. Soon after, the trio entered the true remains of a human city.
The city, Rinka didn’t know, was barely a skeleton of what it used to be thousands of years ago. The buildings were collapsed together, forming hollow spaces beneath the ruins that were suitable for dens. Towards the north, only a short flight distance away, was a building that was much taller than the rest. Long ago, it had caved in, bringing down its height as well as half of its structure, but even so, it stuck out from the sea of ruins surrounding it. This building, Queen’s Rally, with a clearing at its base, was where she had rallied those under her rule together the day she had become their queen. How long had it been since then? One, two years ago? It felt like so much longer…
Rinka and her guards continued east, soaring over the ugly landscape, and those who lived there. Lying ahead was the largest human remnant in the land. It was a building like Queen’s Rally, but if it had been standing instead of lying on its side, it would have been taller. There were several points where its walls had caved in, but the metal that had served as the building’s skeleton held even the walls of rubble up. It served as the home of most of her subjects, acting as sufficient shelter against the elements. And, running along the ground right through this massive structure were several streams of water. It was not the prettiest place to live, but with plenty of room and water for hundreds of animals to dwell, it was enough.
A mile from Queendom’s Center, the ground stopped at a rock wall. It was known as the Eastern Wall, a formation much like the one known as Western Ridge, with a short cliff that stretched for miles in both directions also with a gently decreasing slope until there was none at all. It was at the bottom of this wall, with its branches just a meter from touching the rock face, that a great Weeping Willow grew.
With a soft smile at the sight of her home, Rinka let out a cry to signal her approach. As she and her two guards drew nearer, two more birds circled from behind the tree and pulled a section of the thin, hanging branches apart. After the queen and her escorts soared through the new entrance, the branches were released, falling back in place.

Nothing out of the ordinary has happened today. The scout patrol returned. They found no signs of Shades beyond the Western Ridge. They also checked the main streams and ponds in the territory. The water is still good and the water level is still normal. My subjects will not suffer from thirst yet. We have yet to figure out why all of the river, lakes, and other water sources across the Pridelands dried up. I know Agathar is behind it, but I don't know why or how. I've sent many scout patrols to investigate. But now, no matter how many witnesses they question, they all say the same thing. Basically, "The water was there one day, the next it was gone." It’s come to the point where if I truly want to know why most of the water across the land disappeared, I need to send someone into the Burned Lands to investigate. I need to send them to Agathar’s base, where his followers, Shades and Non-Shades alike, roam. But I can’t do that. I am not willing to send my subjects to their certain death. The risks are too great. How could I even ask one of my loyal followers to take on such a deadly mission, knowing the chance they’ll be discovered, tortured for information and then be put to death is much greater than the chance they’ll return home at all?

The sounds of scrabbling paused after the final question mark was dotted. Rinka hovered over the open book of parchment that was bound together by string at the spine. Twirling a quill in her talons, she looked over the words she had written. Then after a moment, thinking of nothing else to write, she sighed, stuck the quill into a small bottle of ink to her right, and settled back in the pile of moss that she sat in. She rested a talon on top of the book, keeping it open while the ink on the page dried. Absentmindedly, the she-falcon looked into the small glass bottle that rested on the floor in front of the book, watching as the ball of flame inside slowly swayed to and fro.

This flame was her own, encased in the corked fire with no fuel to keep it going. And yet it still lived months after its creation, bringing light to the hollow where none penetrated through. But this was not the only one, for hanging from the walls on bowls of metal mesh were four other bottles of varying shapes and sizes, each holding a ball of flame themselves. These makeshift lanterns were spaced evenly from each other, circling the room and granting each corner of the hollow a fair amount of light, save for the area where the only empty lantern holder hung.

After several minutes of staring off into the flame, she pulled herself forward and flipped back several pages after making sure the ink had dried. Skimming words she had written in the past, she flipped forward a page and found what she was looking for.

The mission to retrieve the disk piece was a success. But it brought many more questions and concerns than I hoped it would solve. Understatement of the century…  The tower Kale and I infiltrated was the one that held the piece. We reached the room where the piece was located, but we barely met any resistance. There were only four shades in that tower, all of which we took out. I still find it very strange. I left Kale outside the room, expecting a trap to be sprung as I approached the piece. But what happened was more surprising... I don’t have the words to describe it except that it was more than what any ambush could have done to me. What I saw after I picked that disk piece up… Even I have a hard time wrapping my mind around it, even believing it.  And I was the one who experienced it.

With a sigh, Rinka shut the book there, having read this passage many times after recording the visions to the best of her ability nearly a moon ago.  She didn’t have the energy to go through it again.
The she-falcon grunted as she got to her feet and began putting everything back in it’s place. The book was pushed into a row of others of varying sizes and materials that lined one of the walls on the ground. The ink bottle was capped and it, along with the writing quill, was placed in a wide, horizontal crevice in the wall about the books. After tidying up the pile of moss she had sat in, Rinka picked up the glass bottle and carefully returned it to its holder. As she turned to leave, her talon caught on a piece of thread, part of a lump that dragged behind her foot as she stepped forward. The she-falcon immediately looked down. Her gaze softened as she realized what it was.
The lump used to be a stuffed doll, no bigger than a five month old chick. It used to be a bright orange with red patterns, and very soft to the touch. But now, horribly scorched as it was, it looked nothing like the hawk it used to be.
Gently, Rinka took the blackened, disfigured toy in her wings and hugged it to her chest.

“Mamma! Pappa! I found Ku-Ku!”

“Great job, Ambyra!”

“Well done! ...Oh! Ku-Ku says he’s tired. He wants to go back home-”

“No Mamma!”

“I want to play some more!”

“Ku-Ku! One more time! If I find you, then I win!”

“Please Mamma? One more time?”

“I don’t know… What do you think, love? It is just about naptime…”

“One more time wouldn’t hurt!”

“Ya! Please Mamma?”

“Alright, alright. But once more and then we’re going home okay?”

“Yay!!”

“Now close your eyes my dears, all four of you, so Ku-Ku can hide…”

Rinka silently buried her face into the precious memory, hugging it closer to her as she stood alone in the dim room surrounded by the five balls of fire that gently flickered inside their bottles of glass.

After setting the burnt doll inside a circular niche beside the northernmost lantern, where it belonged, Rinka walked to the center of the hollow. She stopped in front of mat, woven out of thin branches of the very tree she was in. She bent over, grabbed one side of it and lifted the mat, allowing natural light to flood in through the hole she had uncovered. Propping it up with a wing as she released the edge, Rinka stepped forward and dove through the hole, allowing the mat to fall behind her, closing the exit like a hatch.

The Peregrine Falcon flapped her wings once before landing on the floor of the hollow she had just entered. It was a spacious area, large enough to fit five birds at one time. Against the western wall was a desk covered in paper stacks and scrolls. Hanging above it was a map of the Pridelands, marked all over in ink. Rinka walked to the side of the desk and silently looked over the map.
There were windows along the northern and southern walls that allowed light into the hollow, but due to the branches of the tree on the outside blocking most of the sunlight, it was never the brightest place to be. But Rinka didn’t mind. She could see the little notes beside areas she had circled on the map before, and so the lighting was good enough.
The falcon’s gaze lingered on the western portion of the continent, the words “Burned Pridelands” written in the center. Her former home… The home of her family…

With a sigh, Rinka turned and walked around to stand in front of the desk. She looked down at all the clutter on its surface and, unable to handle the messy state it was in, began tidying it up. She had barely started putting the scrolls into a neat pile on the right side of the desk when she unintentionally brushed her wing across the top, sending several of those scrolls to the ground.
A sound of frustration sounding in her throat, Rinka clenched her talons and lifted her chin to the ceiling with her jaw set tight. After taking a deep breath, she let out a sigh before beginning to gather up the fallen scrolls and setting them back on the desk.
As the falcon picked up the last scroll, she realized there was one that had not been there before she had last exited the hollow. It lay separate from the others, wrapped in a shiny red ribbon. Her curiosity peaked, Rinka exchanged the scroll she was holding with that one and looked it over. After a moment, she began to slide the ribbon off.

“Your majesty!” someone shouted as the door banged open on the other side of the room. Rinka jumped at the sudden intrusion, her heart leaping in her throat as the scroll was crushed in her talons. She whirled around to see one of her guards standing in her hollow, his chest heaving. Seeing him so out of breath, the queen thought they were under attack.

“What? What is it?” demanded out of fright for her people.

“Kale!” the guard gasped, “His hollow! Agathar attacked his hollow this morning!”

Immediately, Rinka felt her blood run cold. No…

“I-Is he?...” she choked.

“We don’t know,” the guard shook his head, “One of the patrols, they said the hollow exploded-”

“Exploded?!”

“They say it knocked Agathar back, but they don’t know if Kale escaped. They didn’t see him, not even after Agathar left-”

“Gather the birds who were on that patrol and tell them to meet me at Queen’s Rally. Then spread word to prepare for a search,” Rinka ordered, already heading for the door, “I am forming a team to investigate the hollow and heaven forbid we find anything. If we don’t, I want anyone who can out there on the lookout for him!”

“Yes, your majesty!”

The two flew out the hollow, shutting the door behind them. The scroll, with the red ribbon still wrapped loosely around it, lay once more on the floor. Having been dropped with the parchment beginning to unroll, the single feather of a Red-Tailed Hawk slid out of the scroll and settled on the ground underneath the desk.

The Return of The Rifts

Three years ago, the Rifts were torn open, stealing eight creatures from their world. Those, in anguish of having been misplaced in another era, were spared from experiencing the destruction of their homes and the lives of their loved ones firsthand. Since that day, the world continued surviving without them, living without awaiting their return. No one knew where those eight went. No one knew when they would be back, or even if they would be back. Only a select few even cared.
But now, this day, a long three years later, with no signs of returning, The Rifts were back. In eight different areas across the land, The Rifts opened and the eight who were stolen suddenly existed in the world once more.

In the north, in a mountain cave scarred by violet scorch marks, a male Peregrine Falcon lay unconscious on the floor of ash and bone.

In the Burned Pridelands, several miles north of the deceased Council Tree, a young she-wolf laid in front of the den that served as the grave of her pack.

On the beach of an island of storms lay a female Peregrine Falcon, unresponsive even as the rising tide began to lap at her feathers.

In the southeast, a she-wolf with scars across her chest lay at the base of a tree of peace, the center of a territory of swamp.

Silence Returns

Now is the time. The Hero from another world, coming again. Silence.

Somewhere in the far distant past, so ancient, no memory would remain, a voice whispered.
"Aurora Borealis."

Somewhere, in a very distant past, long ago and forgotten, a voice echoed.
"Aurora Borealis."

Somewhere, in a time of desperate need, in a cold and barren place far north of what is called the Northern Mountains, another echo came.
"Aurora Borealis."

And He returned.
In a cave beneath the tundra, a lone wolf exhaled the ancient words, his call, his herald.
Silence, still unconscious, breathed the words.
"Aurora Borealis."

Vylk returned to the room where Agathar waited, carefully carrying the piece of Syrune's nest in his jaws, wrapped in several layers of leaves so as not to mix his scent into it. He bowed to Agathar, and set the package on the table, then spoke. "My King," he said, "Apologies for the delay. Not a word was spoken of what we discussed while I was gone."

(*cheering* it's like the beginning of a TV show, all these different scenes all around the world! Wacko )

Kale looked again at the tracking disk, pausing to hover with his wings in midair. It continued to blink and buzz as if he were right on top of a Rift, yet all he saw below him was snow. With a frown and the shake of his head, he dove downwards again in search. The wind howled in his ears on the way back down the mountainside. It had taken all of his courage to come back to another mountain after the last time.

He was somewhere North, but that's about all he was sure on. The Falcon had made his way up the Pridelands and into the snowy Northern Mountains region, following a valley that used to hold the Snow Wolves' territory up into the mountainous forest above it. When the tracking disk had initially went off, it took Kale almost a full day to understand it there were so many different Rifts all appearing at the same time that he did what all intelligent minds did when there was no logical answer: he guessed. This Rift was somewhere just North of Drellan's old camp and birthplace. If he and Najmah were ever going to appear, this would make the most logical place. So he set off, arriving at the site only to discover a thick blanket of snowfall obscuring the mountainside. On his way out of the Pridelands, some of the other Rifts had started to appear on the tracking disk. He made note of two in particular; One on the Island of Storms that particularly moved him, and the one near the wolves' current camp. If Drellan wasn't here, that would be his next choice.

The Disk buzzed and flashed as if he had arrived, but he could not see anyone or any sort of area that might reveal a Rift. To add to it, whether it was new fear of large mountains or something else, the whole area was thick with dread.

The Falcon felt it in the air as he landed on the snow-covered branches of a nearby fir tree. Perhaps the wolf isn't on the surface? Maybe there is a cave nearby?
